Necklace

When it comes to jewellery, some people can't imagine ever taking it off. However, these people have also probably wondered is it safe to sleep with a necklace on? Well, it's time to find out!

Whether it's for sentimental reasons, a fashion statement, or just a habit, some people dislike the idea of ever taking their necklaces or rings off. However, is this kind of lifestyle completely safe? The short answer is – it depends.

So, today we're going to discuss everything you need to know about jewel safety. Also we'll talk about how it can potentially affect your sleep.

Benefits of sleeping with jewellery on

To start things off, we'd like to discuss what one has to gain when wearing a necklace/other jewellery 24/7. After all, it's important to see both sides. While there could be some health concerns, there are also some perks to this kind of lifestyle.

Enhanced security

As we briefly mentioned at the beginning, jewellery items are often sentimental. This means that wearing them gives you a sense of peace and security. And this feeling is incredibly important when it comes to good sleep quality.

After all, stress, anxiety, and depression all wreck our sleep quality, making it more difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. So, if wearing your favourite Tiffany necklace calms you down, you do technically get some much-needed rest out of the deal as well.

However, this only applies if the piece is truly sentimental. If you have no issues with taking your necklace off or just wear necklaces when it's convenient, your sleep won't benefit from this lifestyle choice.

Enhanced safety

Keeping your precious jewellery on you at all times can make it a lot more difficult for someone to steal them – although there's a counterpoint to be made here as well.

After all, if you're a light sleeper, it's hard to imagine anyone successfully prying your engagement ring or gold necklace off you without waking you up in the process. On the other hand, a gold chain inside a box is a lot easier to smuggle away without being noticed.

But, as we said, you could make an argument for both sides on this topic – as we later will. So, see this as the end-all-be-all solution to theft.

Drawbacks of sleeping with jewellery on

Now that we've acknowledged the good, it's time to focus on the bad. And while there's nothing too severe on this list, there are more cons to speak of than pros. So, here are all the ways in which wearing a necklace or other jewellery can hamper your sleep.

Skin irritation or damage

One of the main drawbacks to wearing jewellery while asleep is that it can irritate your skin. And said skin irritation can be caused by a few different factors. For one, allergies.

Although most people don't really think about allergies when it comes to jewellery – it can happen. Accessories made from sterling silver or other metals with nickel plating can discolour your skin – which isn't an ideal look.

Plus, when it comes to rings in particular, dead skin cells are bound to pile up on your finger if you never take the ring off. Not to mention that pointy ornaments on your necklace, earrings, or rings can pierce your skin during the night and invite all sorts of bacteria.

Choking hazard

Although you're unlikely to choke on your own necklace during the night, this is important to keep in mind if you sleep with a toddler or young child. After all, they might want to put the necklace in their mouth and can accidentally lodge it in their throat.

And there have been stories of young children breaking a bead necklace and choking on one of the beads. So, can a necklace choke you? Yes. Is it likely to happen? Not really.

Sleep disruption

Although jewellery can help you sleep on a sentimental level, it can also wake you up on a physical level. That's due to the fact that choking on a pendant or how your skin reacts to a certain metal aren't the only ways jewellery can affect your body.

An image of a woman suffering from sleep disorders.

For example, if your silver necklace gets tangled in your hair, you're probably going to wake up in the middle of the night wondering why your scalp is in pain. And if you like pointy pendants or rings with bulging ornamentation, you might just cut yourself while rolling over in bed.

And let's not forget that you aren't the only potential victim here either. After all, if you happen to slap your partner in your sleep while wearing a gold ring covered in gemstones, he's likely in for a rude awakening.

It's bad for the jewellery

Although this con heavily depends on the materials used when creating the items in question, it's still worth pointing out. Namely, if your favourite pieces are made from materials that can tarnish/rust or have intricate, pointy designs, you might just ruin them.

Sure, a solid-gold ring with no protrusions is completely safe but a necklace with hanging charms might just get ripped during the night. This is especially important for necklaces as the clasp might get damaged while you toss and turn.

Potential loss or theft

As we've said, wearing a necklace or other jewellery can both lower or heighten the odds of those items getting stolen, depending on what you're like and who you ask. In this case, we'd particularly like to focus on necklaces.

Like we mentioned in the previous segment, necklace clasps can come loose while you're sleeping. And you might not always notice it – especially if it falls under the bed. So, if you jump out of bed and go out to conquer the world without doing a thorough check first, you might just lose your beloved necklace.

And if you're a heavy sleeper, getting a necklace off you is probably easier than breaking into a secure safe. So, this point really depends on where you are and how easy it is to wake you up.

Tips for sleeping with jewellery on

If you want to continue wearing your jewellery 24/7 but our previous segment gave you a scare, don't worry – there are steps you can take in order to minimize the downsides.

Choose jewellery that is comfortable

As we've mentioned a few times so far, pointy ornaments can be quite dangerous. And something like a choker could cause issues if worn all the time. However, there are plenty of necklaces and rings that are completely safe and comfortable.

An image of a person's neck with intricate jewellery on

For example, most wedding rings are sturdy and flat, meaning that it's really difficult to damage them or hurt yourself during the night. And necklaces with a simple design and sturdy clasps can be worn for the rest of your life if you so choose.

Plus, it's very easy to check whether a piece of jewellery will give you issues or not. Just put it on, roll around in bed for a bit, and act normal. If you notice that you can get the gunk out of your eyes and turn your spine into a pretzel without anything getting in the way, you're safe!

Clean your jewellery regularly

Anything that touches your skin should be kept clean – that's just a good piece of advice in life. By doing so, not only do you minimize the chances of bacteria formation but you also allow your jewellery to keep its shine for much longer.

However, make sure that you're using the correct cleaning supplies. Sure, water is bound to be safe for most pieces but the second you reach for the soap or some sort of cleaner, it's best to first consult the internet/a professional and see whether your jewellery can be damaged.

Conclusion

Overall, wearing jewellery while you sleep comes with certain setbacks. However, if you put in the necessary work, it's possible to circumvent most of the issues this kind of lifestyle presents.

And if getting proper sleep truly is your main objective, we suggest going through The Sleep Advisors website and getting as informed as possible. We have more posts relating to sleep than you can imagine, so, we guarantee that you'll be sleeping like a baby before long!
