Sleep during hot summer months does not always have to be pleasant. On the other hand, getting low tog duvet is the best possible option. But you know that since you're here. Well, some things are not so obvious, like the mystery of TOG ratings. Let's discover everything you need to know about it.

Think of the TOG rating as a mini air conditioner in your mattress. So, you choose the temperature yourself without a remote control. But once you choose, there is no going back – unless the manufacturer says otherwise! The only difference is that if you want to save time and money, you better think carefully about your sleeper needs. What does that have to do with Tog ratings?

Well, to get a cosy cocoon of comfort and not a sauna, you need to consider many factors. For example, you must not forget about the rest of the year. Of course, low-tog duvets are not a one-season wonder. In fact, they can be very flexible and great travel buddies. If this is too confusing, we've explained everything in multiple sections. So let's start.

Understanding TOG ratings and duvet warmth benefits of low TOG duvets

Although it seems like a puzzling concept, TOG rating is a measurement of a duvet's thermal insulation. So, the higher it is, the warmer the duvet is. On the other hand, a lower duvet TOG rating represents a cooler and more breathable cover. If you want minimal thermal insulation, better airflow and preventing overheating during the night, choose an ideal TOG rating between 1.5 and 4.5. However, we also have a solution for those who are always cold:

  • Medium TOG (5-8) – something between lightweight breathability and sufficient warmth, excellent for transitional seasons
  • High TOG (9-15) – choice for colder climates and winter months when you need extra warmth.

Our sleep preferences and body temperature are not the same as yours. So take your likings into account too. While some are naturally warm sleepers, others tend to feel chilly, even on mild nights. Also, pay attention to the season to ensure year-round cosiness.

Benefits of low TOG duvets

Ahh, you know that feeling when you finally lie down in your bed after a day full of activity! It always seems more comfortable than it actually is, doesn't it? But that's the feeling when you use low TOG duvets. But you'll never lose that pampered feeling. Unlike the high rating that leaves a heavy, trapped feeling, you will feel that you are breathing more easily. It's like unbuttoning your jeans after a long day. We can give you endless examples, but each of them will describe these benefits:

  • Featherlight comfort – low Tog duvet is great for those who want to reveal themselves during the night but are afraid of monsters under the bed
  • Versatility – they are suitable for year-round use.

For hot sleepers

So, due to the cooling properties and breathability, you can't go wrong with a low TOG summer duvets, especially if you are a hot sleeper. Can you really use them all season long? Yes, because they adapt to your body temperature. However, if you need an extra layer of warmth in the winter, getting another heavier duvet is better.

As a hot sleeper, I know how difficult it is to adapt to hotel bedding. But that was before we discovered the benefits of this duvet. For those who travel often, I recommend bringing their easy-to-pack lightweight duvet.

In warmer climates

You will get a cooling effect because they are made of breathable fabric that promotes proper air circulation and allows excess heat and moisture to escape. Natural and lightweight fillings such as silk, bamboo or lightweight synthetic materials contribute to the duvet's airiness. There are also duvets with a cool-to-touch cover that will be your best friend in warmer climates.

Material choices for low TOG duvets

True, low Tog duvets can be great company for summer nights. However, the choice of material can make a difference in comfort, breathability, and overall performance. For example, certain fabrics are easier to maintain, absorb moisture better or are softer to the touch even thought they have same TOG rating.

Here are a few of the most popular choices today, although I would recommend considering goose feather and duck feather as well for warmer months.

Cotton

If we had to single out the most popular material, it would be cotton. Of course, this is due to its well-known features, such as breathability and softness. This makes it ideal for warm sleepers and hot climates. In addition to the luxuriously soft sleep experience, it is very easy to maintain and machine-washable.

However, 100% cotton is sensitive to high-temperature wash and drying processes, so be careful. If you are allergy sufferer or someone with sensitive skin, you don't have to worry this time. You will get a safe haven when you use duvet cotton in combination with a real mattress and pillows.

Bamboo

Of course, we all know this material because of its environmental properties. The exceptional breathability will make you want to use it all summer long, but the ability to regulate heat and moisture can also be useful on colder nights. So, don't forget it as soon as the hot nights are over especially if you have respiratory difficulties during the price of the year.

The cross-section of the bamboo fibre is full of various micro-holes and holes, which means that it can absorb and evaporate sweat in a very short time. You will get a pleasant cooling sensation, prevent excessive sweating and be protected from bacteria and allergens. Thanks to this last feature, you will not have a problem with unpleasant smells. Ah, there is nothing more beautiful than the moment when you are covered with a duvet with a pleasant smell full of freshness!

Eucalyptus

Cotton, wool and silk duvets got a serious competitor – exotic eucalyptus. Eucalyptus bedding, for example, is becoming highly popular these days and what is fantastic about this material is nanotechnology as a way of processing eucalyptus wood. How can you benefit from it? First, such a method of production is minimally harmful to the environment. So, forget about harmful elements and electricity.

The material contains antiseptic and bactericidal properties that prevent the spread of pathogens and mites. Like bamboo, eucalyptus has deodorizing qualities and maintain an ideal body temperature. Regardless of the season, it will contribute to the creation of a comfortable sleeping environment. It is a very durable material, which justifies its high price. With proper maintenance, you will use it for up to 10 years!

Silk

You must have heard that silk bed sheets are cooling and pleasant to touch. Well, if you are willing to spend a little more money for a high-quality light duvet then you can't go wrong with silk. The fact that the Chinese people have kept this secret for thousands of years speaks for itself. Luckily, you don't have to play SpongeBob plankton to enjoy the most luxurious material. Yes, showing your bedroom to your partner will make a great first impression.

Silk underwear is so passΓ© – give me that cooling silk duvet! By investing in silk, you get a duvet with natural temperature-regulating and hypoallergenic properties, a luxurious feel and lightweight, as well as an airy sensation. It may not seem like it, but silk fibres are very strong. In the long run, you save money by choosing a material of exceptional strength and durability.

Synthetic materials

You may not associate synthetic fibres with freshness, but trust the process. Below we will discuss affordable alternatives to natural materials.

The bottom line, synthetic materials offer many advantages but may not provide the same level of breathability and natural properties as some natural materials.

Tip: Choose the material based on your personal preferences, budget constraints, and desired sleeping experience.

Low TOG duvets for allergies and sensitivities

Managing and reducing allergens is often difficult because you must create ideal living conditions in addition to appropriate therapy. Of course, your bedding is crucial – sorry, we mean a low TOG duvet. What does the TOG rating have to do with your allergy? You'll be surprised when you realize how connected the two things are.

First, lightweight materials with lower density are easier to wash and maintain. Regular washing is essential for anyone with respiratory problems to keep mites, pollen, and pet dander at bay. However, quicker drying properties are equally important because they prevent the growth of mould and mildew (triggers for respiratory issues).

Duvets with smaller thicknesses contain less space for dust, dust mites, and other allergens in contrast to higher TOG duvets. We must not forget about hypoallergenic options! Some low TOG duvets are specially designed to be hypoallergenic, making them less likely to trigger allergic reactions.

Finding the perfect low TOG duvet for you

In addition to allergy concerns, take into account your sleeping preferences and climate if you want to find the perfect low TOG duvet. We recommend that you consider breathable materials like bamboo or Tencel, as well as their other properties.

Fill type and construction

Ethical considerations are not the only thing that makes the difference between natural and synthetic materials. However, consider this when shopping if such things are important to you. Let's see what else is hiding there.

Thread count

Thread count is is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric in both horizontal (weft) and vertical (warp) directions. It is often associated with the quality and feel of bed linens, and duvet covers are no exception. This will affect the feel and texture of the fabric and less on the duvet's warmth or insulation.

On the other hand, it is not a decisive factor with duvets as with sheets. In any case, a thread count of around 200 to 300 represents a good balance between durability and softness. 1000 thread count is one of the best ones you can get so it is worth looking for it. That way, you will get comfortable fabric without unnecessary weight or warmth to the duvet.

Maintaining and caring for low TOG duvets

Think of your duvet as a fortress that you need to secure. So you will need even several levels of protection. Here's what will work for your low TOG duvet:

Remember, avoid overwashing, as this can speed up the deterioration process of the duvet's fill. If the duvet is not machine-washable, take it to a professional cleaner.

Conclusion

Once you understand the key factors contributing to their effectiveness, you know everything about low TOG duvets, trust us! To find a comfortable and lightweight solution for a cooler sleep experience, you should consider everything from fill material to fabric quality and construction. Do not forget that each element has an important role in the duvet's thermal performance. But that's not all. When you finally find the low TOG duvet of your dreams, maintain it properly to extend its lifespan.
