If you've ever gone shopping for a pillow, you've certainly noticed how there are a ton of different features to pick from. Well, fortunately for you, we've done all the hard work and gathered all the relevant ones for this particular pillow, so you don't have to comb through a bunch of marketing power-words – not that there are (m)any with OTTY.
Since there's not a lot of information about the foam on OTTY's website (even though this is an all-foam product), we guess it's up to us to break this foam down for you.
Even though this foam is blue, this is not a cool blue gel foam. That was the old Deluxe OTTY pillow. If we had to make an educated guess, weβd say that they've stuck with the light blue tint to βshowβ how “cool” and “fresh” this foam is.
In reality, this new AirTech foam (also used in the Original Hybrid OTTY mattress) is an open-cell foam that's not as dense as the regular one and is, therefore, more breathable. However, in the real world, there's only so much you can do to make foam genuinely breathable.
So, don't expect any too noticeable temperature regulation or enhanced airflow. It's better than regular foam and worse than latex pillows. In other words, you'll still flip your pillow over on a steamy summer night.
The entirety of this pillow's designed to be hypoallergenic, but at this point in time – this is more of a requirement than a feature. Even feather and down pillows are becoming hypoallergenic.
Either way, when sleeping on this pillow, you shouldn't have to worry about any allergic reactions. If you suffer from asthma or other respiratory issues, this pillow won't do anything to aggravate your issues. So, sleep soundly.
If there's one feature that we really like during our testing it's the support.
As a standard-sized, medium-firm, mid-loft 10 cm thick pillow, the OTTY Deluxe checks all the boxes in terms of support. It's not too hard and not too soft. It retains shape, it moulds your head – it's just plain old supportive.
The foam is dense enough to provide good support for your head, neck, and shoulders, yet still soft enough to provide some pressure relief for your weary head.
If you often find yourself waking up with a stiff neck or a headache because of a dingy old pillow, it is our expert opinion that this memory foam pillow will help you out – big time.
You won't need more than a glance and a single hand stroke to be amazed by this pillow cover. We know we didn't.
While it is true that this is a polyester/spandex cover, which leaves quite a lot to be desired in terms of moisture-wicking and heat dissipation, you can't deny the indisputable quality of finish of this cover.
Lovely knit pattern, side mesh for additional airflow, brilliant durability and longevity, scratch, tear and shrink-resistance of the fabric – it's just lovely.
What's even better is that it's easily removable. Just unzip it, toss it in a washer, set the heat to 40Β°C and cycle to gentle and be done with it. Your cover will be as fresh and as clean as day one.
Some may dislike the in-your-face branding, but a thick pillowcase should hide it well enough.
Now, let's tackle this OTTY pillow review. Here's some general info.
This is an all-foam, medium-firm, mid-loft, 60x40x10 cm pillow.
By far one of the prettiest and most lovely-feeling pillow covers we've ever had the pleasure to test. But as we all know, looks aren't all there is to a product, so let's move on.
Cover's 97% polyester and 3% spandex, so you can be certain this one won't shrink after you wash it. It's super durable, doesn't require ironing, and is wrinkle and tear resistant as a cover can be. And it is also hypoallergenic.
What it isn't is breathable, despite the marketing. It's polyester. It's synthetic. You trade toughness for airflow. That's the deal.
Before we get to the performance of the pillow and the core itself, we have to mention that you will see a fire-retardant fire-mesh sock once you remove the cover. Don't remove it. It's there because it's necessary and it doesn't affect the performance of the pillow. Moving on…
This is a well-performing pillow in our opinion. It's medium firm, so it will be a solid fit for a lot of folks. It's right down the middle where it's supportive and cosy at the same time.
Since this is open-cell AirTech foam we're dealing with, the lack of foam density will also allow for that sink-into-the-pillow-feeling, leaving you with a sensation of proper comfort without the sense of overwhelming stiffness. It will also quickly return to its original shape, so turning over shouldn't be uncomfortable.
Because of it, we'd say side sleepers and back sleepers are almost bound to enjoy this one. It will promote optimal spinal alignment and enough clearance for the shoulders while resting on the side. You will still need a proper mattress for side sleeping if you want your shoulder to stay pain-free. Just a pillow isn't enough.
At the same time, most stomach sleepers should probably look for something with a lower profile if they want to avoid pain and discomfort in the neck and upper back area.
One final thing we wanted to touch on is trial and warranty.
If you do purchase this one, you will be pleased to know it comes with a year-long warranty and a two-week-long trial. However, keep in mind that if you do decide to return it during the 14-day trial – you will have to pay a small fee for the return.
The biggest problem with this one (as well as all other memory foam pillows) is heat retention or lack of breathability. In other words – it can get hot. But, this is an all-foam pillow? Can you actually do something about it?
Well, you can. It's not a lot, but there is one thing you can do and it's not to turn the pillow over. It's using a silk pillowcase. It will provide you with a noticeably cooler sleeping surface until you drift off to peaceful slumber.
Cotton should work, too, but silk is the better option. Just make sure you don't buy some cheap, shiny polyester knock-off. That one won't help.
Another thing we need to mention is that this is not a fully-recyclable product, or exactly eco-friendly or sustainable. So, once this pillow becomes useless to you in a few years – send it back to OTTY and have them handle it. Foam has to be repurposed.
If you want a memory foam pillow that contains a higher percentage of bamboo, then this one is a great alternative.
Panda Memory Foam pillow provides everything you expect from a premium pillow, and even more. It is highly supportive, but at the same time comfortable and pressure relieving. It is medium-firm so it is good for side and back sleepers, while some stomach sleepers will find it comfortable and others won't.
Removable and machine washable cover contains 40% of bamboo so cover is great in wicking moisture away and is breathable. Panda Bamboo Memory Foam pillow comes with 10-year warranty which is above industry standard. 30-night trial is also great addition. All in all, we are really pleased with this one.
Many would compare OTTY's pillows, the OTTY Deluxe to the OTTY Deluxe Pure pillow because they're from the same company – and so did we. So we won't do it again. The Deluxe Pure Charcoal pillow eliminates odours and keeps things fresh and cool in a different way than the Deluxe, and on top of that – it's in a slightly different price category than the Deluxe. So, let's just compare this one with a standard, mid-range memory foam pillow. What's better here?
Two words – support and support.
All jokes aside, this one truthfully strikes gold in terms of support as far as mid-range foam pillows go. There isn't much we'd do differently even if we were to design a pillow for optimal support.
To cut things short, the OTTY Deluxe Pillow is neither eco-friendly nor sustainable. Just like any other memory foam pillow encased in polyester. These are materials that have many amazing features, but are not beneficial for our environment. The situation is slightly better when recycled polyester is used, but to our knowledge OTTY used virgin polyester.
We take into account customer reviews, materials used, and how the product performs. How do we assess performance? Exactly in this order:
Certain features like breathability require additional tests:
You're already familiar with our general impressions, so let's just quickly double down on everything.
The support on this pillow is amazing – that's our main takeaway. No matter if you're a side or back sleeper. If you switch positions during the night – it'll still give you the support you need and won't go flat.
This is not one of the coolest foam pillows we've tested so far. Granted, memory foam tends to sleep hot, but considering OTTY claims this one does a good job at dissipating heat – we have to hold it against them.
As for the build quality – it's top-notch. We have to give credit where credit is due. No loose threads, no funky smells (other than regular foam smell) and so on. All in all – very solid craftsmanship that should last you for years to come.
To sum up – our testers gave it an 8 out of 10. So, not bad. Not bad at all.
For the final comparison, we thought we'd keep things simple and just show you a head-to-head comparison of the main specs and features:
Phew, that was a lot of information!
But we hope you found it all useful and that it helped you make a decision about which one of these two OTTY pillows is right for you. If you're still undecided, here's a quick recap:
The OTTY Deluxe comes with an updated AirTech foam core and a polyester spandex cover. The Deluxe pillow is more breathable than most other foam pillows on the market, but it's not as good at moisture-wicking and heat-dissipating as the Deluxe Pure.
The OTTY Deluxe Pure comes with charcoal and bamboo-infused memory foam core. This pillow eliminates odours, improves breathability and regulates temperature to a degree.
So, which one should you choose?
If you want a more breathable pillow that's still good at moisture-wicking and heat-dissipation, go for the Deluxe Pure. But if you're looking for a more affordable option that's still better than what you'd usually find on the market, then the Deluxe is the way to go.
Sleep well!
