Features to look for in Dunelm bed sheets

First of all, no matter what anyone says – buying sheets is a tough job. There are things you have to learn before you splurge on bedding.

Thankfully, we're here to help you learn. When it comes to sheets available at Dunelm, here are the features to keep in mind!

Cotton, Egyptian cotton, poly-cotton, microfibre polyester

At Dunelm, you can find several materials from which the sheets are made of, but these three are the most prevalent.

Egyptian cotton is a luxurious type of cotton that is known for its softness and durability. If you're looking for a high-quality set of bed sheets, then Egyptian cotton is definitely the way to go.

Poly-cotton, on the other hand, is a blend of polyester and cotton, which creates sheets that are durable and easy to care for. Poly-cotton bed sheets are a good choice for people who want the best of both worlds – the durability of polyester and the softness of cotton.

Microfibre polyester is a type of fabric that is made from thin (two times thinner than regular polyester) fibres. It is often used to make clothes and bed sheets because it is soft and durable.

Depth, length & width of fitted sheets

Depth, length and width of bed sheets are important because they make sure the sheet will fit well on your bed – it's that simple.

Most of the time, fitted sheets will comfortably fit on mattresses that are up to 30 cm deep. However, a sheet available at Dunelm's can be as deep as 38 cm.

But, since they're fitted, they will easily fit even thinner mattresses, but still, it's probably best to look for “shallower” fitted sheets if you have a 15 cm deep mattress.

As for length and width – you just have to match the size of the sheet to the site of the mattress. That means choosing from the following:

Match those to the size of your mattress, and you'll have a perfect, snug fit.

Valance VS fitted valance

The valance is an extra piece of fabric that hangs over the edge of your mattress, and it's there to give your mattress a little bit of extra style. It's also there to keep the mattress clean, but despite what you might hear or read – that's not the main purpose.

Fitted valances are a lot like regular valances, but they're fitted to the shape of your mattress so that they don't move around as much.

Some people prefer fitted valances because they think they look neater, but it's really up to you which one you choose. Thankfully, Dunelm offers both – so you'll get to pick.

Continental, King Oxford or Bolster pillowcase

If you're shopping for a set, you'll probably want to look the pillowcases, as well. Here are the three you need to check out.

A Continental pillowcase is a square-shaped pillowcase used with a continental pillow, which is usually 65 x 65 cm. Because of its square shape, these pillows, and therefore pillowcases, as well, are used as decorative items, rather than the ones you sleep on.

A King Oxford pillowcase is a pillowcase with a fabric border around the edge, which is generally around 5 in diameter. As you can imagine, these pillowcases aren't that common for sleeping pillows, but as far as we're concerned, the extra edge shouldn't stop you from trying one.

A Bolster pillowcase is a type of pillowcase that is designed to fit around a bolster pillow. Bolster pillows are long and cylindrical, and they are often used to support the neck or back. Because of their shape, bolster pillowcases are also long and cylindrical, and they fit snugly around the pillow.

Weave & finish

The weave of a fabric is the way the threads are interlaced, and it's an important factor to consider when shopping for bed sheets. The most common weaves are:

Plain weave – The simplest and most common weave, in which the yarns go over and under each other. This results in a strong and durable fabric.

Satin weave – A type of standard weave (alongside plain and twill) that gives out smooth, luxurious and shiny fabric vibes. Everyone loves it.

Jacquard weave – A type of weave that creates patterns in the fabric by often using different coloured threads or intricate designs.

Sateen weave – A type of weave that results in a fabric that is smooth and soft to the touch. One of the most popular weaves for beddings.

Percale weave – The most popular bedding weave is percale. It's a crisscross design with the same amount of surface thread on each side. Percale is both durable, lightweight, and super breathable – perfect for summer nights.

The finish of the fabric is also important, and it's usually achieved by adding a special treatment or colour to the fabric. As you'll see below, Dunelm pillows come in all kinds of finishes.

OEKO-TEX certificate

One of the most important things to look for when shopping for bed sheets – whether they're fitted or not – is the OEKO-Tex certificate.

OEKO-Tex is an independent, international testing and certification organisation that tests textiles for harmful substances. It's one of the most respected organisations in the textile industry, and it's pretty much the only one that's fully respected in the industry.

If a product has an OEKO-Tex certificate, as all Dunelm catalogued products do, it means that it's been tested and found to be free of harmful or toxic substances.

This is important because it means that you can be sure that the bed sheets you're buying are safe for you and your family.

Tips for buying and using Dunelm bed sheets

Before we move on to our top five picks, we wanted to share some tips for buying and using Dunelm-available bed sheets with you.

When it comes to something as important as a bed sheet, you want to be sure that you're choosing a durable option. After all, you're going to be spending a lot of time sleeping on these sheets, and you don't want them to wear out after just a few washes.

Choosing an OEKO-Tex certified bed sheet is important because it guarantees that the fabric has been tested and found to be free of harmful or toxic substances. This is critical because it ensures that the bed linens you're purchasing are safe for you and your loved ones.

Thread count is significant for bed sheets because it affects the quality and durability of the fabric. A high thread count means that there are more threads in each square inch of the fabric, which makes it stronger and less likely to tear.

Finally, you wouldn't want to destroy your new linens by washing or drying them in a way that's not recommended. Always read the care instructions that come with your sheets, so you know how to properly care for them.

The advantages of owning Dunelm bed sheets

Now that we've introduced you to the five of our favourite picks, allow us to present you with some advantages that come from owning one of these.

Sheets that are soft and comfortable could help you sleep better. You'll lie down, close your eyes, and feel like you're sleeping on a cloud. They'll be warm in the winter and cool in the summer – just like you want them to.

Having sheets that are durable is an advantage because they will last longer – as simple as that. You won't have to replace them that often, so you'll save some money in the long run.

On top of it all, these sheets will be machine-washable and drier friendly, so you can easily take care of them. No need to be careful with these – just wash and dry away!

As we briefly mentioned, Dunelm offers a variety of weaves, finishes, and thread counts for their bed sheets. So, you'll definitely be able to find the perfect set for your bedroom. They have something for everyone.

Last but not least, these sheets are hypoallergenic. If you're someone who's prone to allergies, then this is a major advantage. You'll be able to sleep soundly without worrying about waking up with a stuffy nose or itchy eyes.

Conclusion

And that's all you need to know to find the best Dunelm sheets! So, which sheets are you going to get? Let us know in the comments. And if you have any questions, check out the FAQ section or contact us directly.
