When you picture a 5 cm deep hollowfibre-filled soft topper – who do you picture as the ultimate customer? Well, it's actually quite versatile in that sense. Not only does it provide an extra layer of soft comfort, but also helps keep things reasonably cool in the summer and decently warm in the winter.
This topper is ideal for :
Whenever you're shopping for a mattress topper, it's important to know about the different features that set one apart from the other. This will help you decide whether a certain topper is the right fit for you and your needs.
On that note, here are some key features of the Silentnight Deep Sleep mattress topper:
At 5 cm, this topper is pretty much at the preferred depth for many people.
Not too thick that it would make getting in and out of bed a chore, but also not too thin that you wouldn't feel much of a difference.
When lied upon, the topper dips down quite a bit, so you will feel like you're “sinking in” this topper as opposed to “lying on top of it”, which is exactly what we'd expect from this kind of product.
Arguably our favourite thing about this topper is the soft polyester microfibre cover. Not only is it machine-washable (not removable though), but it's also hypoallergenic and dust-mite resistant as any polyester cover would be.
And, while you might trade some breathability for durability, we feel like, that is a good trade to make. You're not losing a lot, but you are gaining quite a bit.
Silentnight Luxury Deep Sleep topper, as Silentnight sometimes likes to call this one, is generously filled with soft hollowfibre, which makes it super duper comfy to lie on.
The aforementioned quilted cover helps a lot, ensuring gently supportive filling stays in the right place and retains its shape for a long time. How? With properly placed internal walls.
In other words, there are separate pockets willed with hollowfibre to prevent bunching and lumps from developing.
More of a requirement rather than a feature nowadays, but still worth mentioning. The microfibre cover and the hollowfibre filling are both hypoallergenic, protecting you and your loved ones from dust mites and other allergens.
On top of that, we're always happy to see a fully machine-washable mattress topper. Not because we're lazy and putting the removable cover back on makes us snooze (okay, maybe a little bit), but because just tossing the entire thing into a washer makes maintenance super fast and hassle-free.
Simply looking at the features usually translates to “Wow, this looks fantastic”, but we all know it's not like that in the real world – so let's review this topper.
Design-wise – everything's more than fine.
The cover feels soft to the touch and looks really good. It's a simple, old-school approach, with prominent quilted pockets and a pure-white aesthetic. Also, the topper features four elasticated corner straps to keep this puppy secure, so that's all good.
Performance-wise – we'll start off with the strongest feature which is, you've guessed it, comfort.
And, while we know comfort's subjective, the level of softness and soft cradling this topper offers objectively feels good. A firm mattress with excellent support would be a perfect fit for this one.
Next, we have breathability. It's not tip level but it won't make you hot. It's hollowfibre, so it will retain some heat on a very hot day, but more often than not – you should be just fine.
Finally, we have support (or lack thereof), or as Silentnight likes to call it “gentle support”. What this translates to is there's almost no support here. To be fair, we wouldn't consider this a bad thing hadn't Silentnight called it “gentle support”, so we're just letting you know.
Motion isolation is also pretty non-existent. Pressure relief, too, although some might feel the “pressure” leaving their body due to the actual softness of the Deep Sleep.
That's about it.
There are quite a few shortcomings with this one, but our biggest issue is the fact that this topper is pretty much a one-trick pony. It offers one thing and one thing only when you really think about it.
And, quite honestly, we'd like to see a bit more from a mid-range topper that's very close to being considered a high-end product if you're shopping for it on Amazon UK.
Other than that, there's not much to say about it. Everything's pretty much as you'd expect it to be, so there won't be any surprises there.
It's just we felt like there was room for a bit more.
Delivery – There is free shipping available and the delivery is within 5 working days.
Payment – You can pay with standard card payments, as well as split payments using Klarna or SplitIt.
Customer service – On their website, there is an email address and phone number for you to contact with any query you may have. In addition to this, there is a live chat but it does require a name and email. Although it is named a live chat, they aim to respond within 24-48 hours. The office hours are only Monday-Friday, unlike other companies who are available 24/7. This can make contacting them difficult if you are needing an immediate response.
Now, let's look at some other products in a similar price range that might offer some of the things Deep Sleep didn't.
When it comes to adding a little extra life to an old mattress, the Visco therapy memory foam topper is a great option. At 7 cm, this topper can breathe new life into any sleeping surface short of concrete.
After all, when it comes to mattress toppers, an extra 2 cm can make a world of a difference.
It is medium-firm, so it should provide support and comfort no matter what type of mattress you're using it with. Plus, the cover can be easily removed and dry-cleaned whenever necessary.
So, if easy maintenance was a key selling point, this is a much better mattress topper for you than the Silentnight Deep Sleep Ultimate mattress topper.
However, the topper can get a bit hot during the summer months, so keep that in mind if you're looking for a cool topper to help you sleep during the summer
The only thing that comes to mind is comfort. This topper is one of the softest and most comfortable we've had a chance to try.
Other than that, there's not much going on here. But, if you're looking for a cloud-like sleeping surface – this is as good as it gets (within a reasonable price range, of course).
For the sake of transparency, we'd now like to go over exactly how our tests are done. On a broader level, all of the products we review go through the following procedures:
To be more specific with how we approach each product, here are the tests done in order to evaluate the Deep Sleep topper:
Some mattresses can be uncomfortable to sleep on and could do with a softer surface. This is what the Deep Sleep mattress topper can help with. The quilted design is also a great idea as it creates inner walls so the filling remains in place. This means the topper can stay fluffy and last longer than other choices.
Basically, if you're looking for a super soft and cloud-like sleeping surface, this is as good as it gets. But, if you're looking for anything with support – keep on looking because there's not much going on here.
After testing and comparing it to other Silentnight products, we would suggest looking at the other options available to suit your needs. There are other toppers out there that offer more for the same price – or even less. We've mentioned two of them.
So, all in all, the Silentnight Deep Sleep is not a bad topper, and you do get what's advertised (other than the “gentle support”, but we're pretty sure everyone knows that stands for nothing other than “soft”).
